Memories of Cliff

Robin and Norma from Uxbridge (near London) have been listeners almost since Dell began broadcasting in 1997. We thought that you might like to glimpse into the mind of a mad manic Cliff fan (pictured opposite, with Robin) who has kindly donated the following article:-

Robin and Norma

Hi, this is Norma, known as the "Crazy Cliff Fan", beside me is the long suffering Robin, he has had to endure more than 27 years of me 'ogling' another man!!

I would like to share some of my Cliff memories with you all.

I was l5 years old and still at school when I first heard "Move it", and from then on I was hooked. I left school and as soon as I was earning a living, most of my spare cash went on buying Cliff records and going to concerts.

At 19, I got a job in an Hotel opposite Heathrow Airport as a Room Attendant, and to my utter shock and disbelief one day, Cliff emerged from one of my rooms!!! I got his autograph, waved to him as he stepped into the lift - then flew into the room and into his bed, it was still warm - mmmm!!

One Sunday, a friend and I had gone to Heathrow Airport on the lookout for Cliff. We didn't see him that time but spotted Hank Marvin from the Shadows (as close as we were going to get to him). We asked Hank if he would mind having his photo taken with us, OK! he said, but we had no camera!! I pointed to a photo booth and the three of us squeezed in. Hank actually paid the 2 shillings for the 4 photos. My friend and I had half each, I still have my 2 photos.

Yet another Sunday at the airport this time we struck lucky, Cliff came towards us, we stood chatting like old friends, he had a record in the charts 'Theme For A Dream' the B side was a fun song called "Mumblin' Mosie". I asked him to sing it, he did, well a few bars anyway. How’s that for a personal rendition from a "superstar".

Time went by and I got married - no, not to Robin. I had children and could no longer afford my hobby - Cliff! That marriage failed - (he didn’t like Cliff - ha ha!) so we parted company!

Then I met Robin, he liked Cliff, so we hit it off from day one (chuckle). I was able to pursue my hobby once more, thank you Robin! I got back into record buying and going to concerts, taking my dearly beloved with me, sometimes.

In 1992 I joined the Cliff Richard fan club, more chances to see Cliff! Since then I have had a personally signed photo and a birthday card from him! (it pays to be in the club). 3 years ago I bought a raffle ticket (through the club) donating to help the homeless, but the prize was a suit belonging to Cliff - guess who won it??? YES!! Yours truly.

Last July a British Airways Hotel next to where we work, was finally complete and ready to accept guests, when I heard rumours that Cliff was officially going to open it! NAH!! I could not be that lucky. On my doorstep basically?? Oh yes he did, I chatted with him as he arrived, got him to autograph a record cover that I've had (plus the record - "Me and My Shadows" LP) for almost 40 years and was more nervous than at the airport back in 1961.

About three and a half years ago, we found a radio presenter (Dell Richardson) that had no qualms about playing Cliff, (not like some Radio Stations). So I listened to his 'Good Rocking Tonight' show every week in case it was a fluke, no it wasn’t, so I began phoning in for Cliff requests and often had a laugh and a chat with Roy Williams.

Back in June, Robin and I had the privilege of meeting this 'great' presenter at the Radio Caroline Studios along with Karen, Roy, Bryan and many more lovely people.

Thanks Dell, you’ve made at least one Cliff fan VERY happy. It was an honour to sponsor your 3 hour show.
